This is an animation of GMR Solar Tropics concept for a 312-acre solar economic development zone near Bangalore that marks the dawning of a new solar economy in India. The project is described as the worlds first Special Economic Zone dedicated to the solar industry in India. This project is creating an ecosystem for solar goods, providing world class infrastructure and utilities to house all activities related to solar products including research and development, manufacturing, services and training.

This is the first phase of 3,700-acre development intended to attract high-technology investment to a growth corridor between the cities of Bangalore and Chennai. The project is timed with the recent announcement of India’s intention to create a 20 gigawatt solar capacity by 2020. The Special Economic Zone where GMR Solar Tropic is located is offering an aggressive array of incentives. Those incentives are expected to reduce project costs by about 20%, create perpetual savings on facility operating costs by up to 18%, and exempt profits from taxation for up to 15 years. Incentives may also include investment subsidies of up to 20% of project costs.

The backing entity behind the GMR Solar Tropic project is GMR Group, a major Indian infrastructure developer with interests in airports, energy, highways, urban infrastructure and Special Economic Zones. GMR Group has broad international reach, with operations in India, Turkey, the UK, The Netherlands, Australia, South Africa, and Indonesia.
